The following section is dedicated to athletes that are looking to earn soccer scholarships in the United States.

U.S college soccer is the sport that continues to grow the most in the United States. Although women’s soccer has been popular for a long time, men’s soccer has been getting more spotlight recently. However, approximately 2% of male college graduates are recruited to play on the Major League Soccer (MLS), meaning competition is very high. Meanwhile, women that are top level student-athletes have a more realistic chance of joining the National Women’s Soccer League teams (NWSL) as they draft college players on a regular basis.

College soccer is an attractive opportunity for many international student-athletes. If you are a player considering going to America, and you don’t have a direct opportunity to get into a professional league or sign a professional contract in the next couple years, then college soccer is definitely something worth considering. Understandably, competition for entry is very high, which is why SportUSA offer a real advantage. We encourage our clients to pursue a studying career at a college in the United States as this allows the athlete to combine education and sport. Playing college soccer is also a great thing to have on a player resume to play in other leagues.

Additionally, our team of professionals will provide you with the best advice and guidance in helping you to find the right university, which in turn will bring you a once in a lifetime experience. Many athletes make the mistake of not doing enough research on the colleges they would like to go to. Some of the universities are small or don’t have the facilities that athletes expect, therefore it is key to do the adequate research beforehand. At SportUSA we take care of that for you.

The college experience will give you four years to prepare for the next step in your soccer career, meaning athletes have the opportunity to mature and make mistakes while they continue with their education, at zero dollars cost.

The idea is to use that four-year college team experience education and from there to turn professional. Here, at SportUSA what we are trying to do is to create that pathway together.

Soccer in America is very competitive. Primarily coaches are going to look at a video highlights of the player and the resume. Both are going to be determinant factors in the scholarships. American soccer college has a different style of play, caused in part because of the unlimited substitutions allowed in the game. This results in very physical and fast paced games. In order to be considered by the top universities in the United States, athletes should compete in high level teams and play in national tournaments. This will show coaches that they are ready to compete in the U.S.

Another factor that will influence coaches is the potential of the athlete, coaches know that performances will improve following intensive training. Additionally, coaches will talk to other people to get references from players and colleagues.

Coaches will also look at academic performances, which decides if the athlete is going to be able to get into school in the first place. A student with great academic record can benefit from both academic and sport scholarships.

In terms of the scholarship itself, for female athletes the opportunity is even more attractive. The gender equity law requires for every university to spend the exact amount for men as for women, and as a result there are a maximum of 13 scholarships available per women’s team in Division one, compared to 9.9 in the men’s team (view table).

Athletes who are granted a soccer scholarship are expected to practice at least 5 times a week. Training sessions would consist of strength and conditioning practices as well as soccer training. Athletes will be immersed in a professional environment with access to great facilities and resources that allows them to compete at the highest level. Typically, many athletes from outside the US struggle to adapt to the physical demand of the circuit, which is why SportUSA have a variety of nutritional programs, ITF support and training events that will help athletes to reach their potential. By following our personalized programs, international athletes will quickly adjust to the competition and gain an edge over other players.
