Universities and colleges award various sports scholarships to talented athletes, which allows the athlete to participate in collegiate, intercollegiate matches and national championships. If you are a female or male athlete in any sport you are able to gain a scholarship in any sport.

The following section is dedicated to athletes that are looking to earn basketball, rugby or field hockey scholarships in the United States

U.S college basketball continues to be one of the most popular sports among young athletes. Representing your university in a packed college gymnasium on game day is one of the best experiences as a student-athlete. It is estimated that once they have completed their education, around 2% of basketball players are drafted by NBA teams.

Rugby is one of the largest growing sports clubs in the US. It became an Olympic sport in 2016, which boosted its exposure. Additionally, the first Major League Rugby (MLR) Collegiate Draft took place in 2020, with the second one happening in August 2021 to help growing the league.

Meanwhile, field hockey has attracted plenty of interest in the last few years, and leading universities such as Stanford or North Carolina have focused their recruiting overseas. Around 15% of all college field hockey players were from outside the United States.

Basketball, rugby and field hockey are attractive opportunities for many international student-athletes. Every sport program in the U.S is tailored to the physical and psychological needs of each athlete. Understandably, competition for places is very high, which is why SportUSA offer a real advantage. We encourage our clients to pursue a studying career at a college in the United States as this allows the athlete to combine education and sport. Although it is no secret that this won’t be the case for everybody, the ones that succeed will not only enjoy an incredible opportunity but continue on an upward trajectory within their sport career. Additionally, our team of professionals will provide you with the best advice and guidance in helping you to find the right university, which in turn will bring you a once in a lifetime experience.

The idea is to complete the four-year college education and from there progress towards becoming a professional. Here, at SportUSA what we are trying to do is to create that pathway together.

This will depend on the sport. In terms of basketball, coaches will usually recruit players who have excellent athletic ability and a great understanding of the game. Each player should know what coaches look for in each position and showcase their abilities. On the other hand, rugby recruiters will look for players with outstanding work rate, leadership and reliability.

Lastly, field hockey recruiters will prioritize positions that will directly affect the score in a game. That is goalkeepers and forwards. Speed, consistency and decision making will also be key factors in the final decision.

Although there are specific factors to each sport, others are common in every sport, and are important in order to get a scholarship. Those are being a team player, the potential of the athlete and having good grades to bring the team’s overall GPA up.

Lastly, in order to be considered by the top universities in the United States, athletes should compete at the most prestigious national tournaments at a younger age. This will show coaches that they are ready to compete in the U.S.

In terms of the scholarship itself, for female athletes the opportunity is even more attractive. The gender equity law requires for every university to spend the exact amount for men as for women, and as a result there are a maximum of 15 basketball scholarships available per women’s team in Division one, compared to 13 in the men’s team (view table).   Additionally, rugby and field hockey scholarships are only available for women. They both offer a maximum of 12 scholarships each in Division one (view table).

Athletes who are granted a basketball, rugby or field hockey scholarship are expected to practice daily, sometimes more than once a day. Training sessions would vary on the sport and they will be pretty much like professional athletes.

Basketball training would consist of strength and conditioning practices as well as shooting drills, rebounding and passing drills. Rugby training would consist of strength and conditioning practices as well as kicking, catching and full contact drills. Field hockey training would consist of strength and conditioning practices as well as defense, dribbling and passing drills.

Furthermore, U.S universities have the best facilities in the world, they have access to exclusive equipment and the latest technology available to each athlete. Typically, many athletes from outside the US struggle to adapt to the physical demand of the competition, which is why SportUSA have a variety of nutritional programs, ITF support and training events that will help athletes to reach their potential. By following our personalized programs, international athletes will quickly adjust to the competition and gain an edge over other athletes.

Sport USA can not only help find a university which will suit your individual requirements, but can also help you improve your tennis and grades before you go. We can assist with strength and conditioning programs, SAT tutoring, ITF tournament support and training weeks, all delivered by some of our elite partners from around the world.
